Carlson competes at national track meet for NDSU

North Dakota State standout Whitney Carlson finished fifth in her heat of the 400 meter hurdles at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., on Wednesday.
Carlson, a 2006 graduate of Pingree-Buchanan High School, was one of only 27 D-I runners to qualify for the national meet in the event. She posted a time of 59.57 and did not qualify for the semifinals. She did set a NDSU school record of 58.12 earlier in the season.
Only the top three finishers from each heat and the next three best times advanced to the semifinals in the event. Fourteen of the advancing 18 runners were from BCS conferences.
Carlson, just a sophomore, won 19 state titles in high school for Carrington. She holds state records in the 200 (24.98), 100 hurdles (14.33), 300 hurdles (42.26) and long jump (19-6 1/2).
