The Jamestown College men finished off a Jimmie sweep with a 65-61 win over Minnesota-Morris Wednesday night.
The Jimmies led by 15 at halftime, but had to hold off a late Cougars’ rally for their eighth win of the season.
Freshman Eric Shulstad had 16 points on 6 of 6 shooting to lead the way. Big John Peabody had 15 points and 10 rebounds for the 8-4 Jimmies, who are off until Dec. 18-19 when they play at the Dickinson State Classic.
Mandan and Fargo South hold the top spots in the first Class A boys’ and girls’ basketball polls of the season.
The defending champion Braves are off to a 2-0 start and come to Jamestown on Friday in the season-opener for the Blue Jay boys.
Mandan got five of the nine first-place votes. The other four went to Bismarck, which is ranked second. Fargo North, Dickinson (1-0) and Bismarck Century (2-0) round out the poll.
The Bruins got all nine first-place votes on the girls’ side. They’re already off to a 2-0 start after missing a perfect season by one game last year. They lost to Bismarck in the state championship game to finish 24-1.
Twelve Jimmies scored, three in double figures, in an easy 79-45 win over Minnesota-Morris Wednesday night.
The sixth-ranked Jimmies scored the first 17 points of the game as they dominated en route to their 12th win against two losses.
Kellie Schuneman’s 14 were a game-high. Giuli Varriano had 13 points and nine rebounds and Amanda Rantappa had 12 points on four threes.
The Jimmies are off until Dec. 21 when they travel to St. Cloud State for an exhibition game against the Huskies.
